NAIROBI PROVINCE

Nairobi is Kenya's capital city and has a population of approximately 1.5 million people. The name Nairobi is Maasai for The place of sweet waters. This is where the Maasai people used to bring their livestock to graze and drink water in the olden days. Nairobi is for the large part, a city of temporary settlers, who come from the rural areas in search of better paying jobs and then go back to their rural homes after retirement. The main languages spoken in Nairobi are English and Swahili which are also the country's official languages. One of the most distinguishing features of Nairobi, that all foreign visitors never fail to notice, is the Matatu business. Matatus, or Manyangas, as they are sometimes called, are privately owned mini-buses that ply the city routes in an effort to alleviate the transportation problem in Nairobi. This transportation problem is caused by the constant rural-to-urban migration that puts a severe strain on the public transportation infrastructure. Matatus are known for overloading and playing outrageously loud music, but are very popular among young Kenyans. Another common feature of Nairobi, are the Jua Kali artisans, who work by the roadside, and produce low cost products. Jua Kali is swahili for hot sun, and is simply a reference to the conditions these small-scale artisans work under----the hot Nairobi sun.
