This is the single most populous community in Kenya and in many ways the most dominant. They have always been revered in Kenyan circles as a very educated and enterprising community. They were very active in Kenya's struggle for independence, mainly because its their fertile land that the colonialists first pounced on when they landed in Kenya--the so-called White Highlands. Estimates at the end of 1997 placed their population at around 6 million. They inhabit Central Province, home to the famous Mount Kenya, and just a few miles north of Kenya's capital city Nairobi. Communities in Kenya are usually identified by the language they speak which in their case is Kikuyu language(or Gikuyu). Kikuyu language is of the Bantu family.
