Jamhuri Day is a national holiday in Kenya observed every 12th of December to celebrate Kenya's independence from British rule. Jamhuri is Swahili for "Republic" and its a remebrance of 12th December 1964, when Kenya became a republic and Mzee Jomo Kenyatta became the country's first President. The occassion is usually marked by a national address by the Head of State who on many occassions offers pardons to some prisoners. Various state sponsored feasts are also conducted around the country in line with Kenya's tradition of generousity and charity.
